Recruiting & NCAA Rules

Welcome to Santa Clara's website for information about Recruiting and NCAA Rules. Whether you are a prospective student-athlete, current student-athlete, alumni, faculty or friend, we hope you find the information here useful and informative.

Prospective Student-Athletes
If you are interested in being a student-athlete at Santa Clara, this section includes information on applying to Santa Clara, athletic scholarships and financial aid, and how to send a coach your profile.

A Note for Transfers
Because Santa Clara University has earned a reputation as one of the top athletic programs in the country, SCU coaches receive a high volume of inquiries from potential applicants. Under NCAA rules, Santa Clara may not respond via e-mail or phone to four-year college transfer student-athletes before the student obtains a release from the first college. The release must faxed to the Santa Clara Athletic Department at 408-554-6942. Four-year college transfer students must obtain an additional release to be immediately eligible for competition at Santa Clara.

Note for High School Athletes
Please note that the NCAA places restrictions on when and how we can contact you throughout your high school career. We cannot send you recruiting letters or e-mails until September 1 of your junior year. We can always accept calls from you, but we cannot place or return phone calls to you until you are a senior (the first permissible calling date varies from sport to sport). We can watch your games, but we cannot make in-person contact with you until you are a senior. In regard to all these restrictions, the NCAA also limits the amount of calls and contacts that can be made.

Santa Clara is committed to compliance with NCAA regulations and therefore believes it is critical to ASK BEFORE YOU ACT. This link will provide basic information about following NCAA Rules for Alumni, Faculty and Friends. If you have further questions regarding NCAA regulations please contact the Santa Clara University Athletic Department at 408-554-4063.

    Scholarships and Financial Aid
Although athletic scholarships can only be offered to recruits by our coaches, Santa Clara offers many other types of financial aid. The University's Office of Financial Aid will help you find explanations for each type of financial aid, along with links for more information and applications.

    Employment Regulations for Student Athletes
All student-athletes who are planning on working during the academic year must fill out the Employment Request Form, which is available by Clicking Here. The form must be filled out entirely before starting your job and returned to the compliance office for approval. The appropriate rules are on the form.

    Gambling & Sports Wagering
The explosive growth of gambling has caused a noticeable increase in the number of sports wagering-related cases processed by the NCAA and threatens the integrity of college sports. The NCAA opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. Click Here to find out more on what the NCAA is doing on this issue.

    Current Athletic Staff
The compliance office publishes a regular newsletter for Santa Clara athletic staff members of up-to-date NCAA rules updates and information on pending legislation. Click Here to check out the latest issue.

If you have further questions regarding NCAA regulations, please contact the Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and Recreation at 408-554-4063.
