Santa Clara Takes First Two Matches At Claremont Convergence

Oct. 6, 2006

Quotes

POMONA, Calif. - Santa Clara returned to their winning ways Friday with dominating victories over Chapman University and Occidental College. The Broncos are now 5-1 against WWPA opponents and have improved their record to 7-9 heading into their final day of competition at the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

The Broncos came out on all cylinders and put together a 15-goal performance to defeat Chapman 15-3. Freshman Liam Farrell had another solid outing, scoring four goals and notching an assist. Billy Gorin had a hat-trick and added two assists and two steals, as the pair of Farrell and Gorin contributed to ten of the team's 15 goals. Rob Callahan had seven blocks and two assists in the cage as Santa Clara allowed a season-low three goals.

And Santa Clara kept right on rolling in their afternoon match against Occidental. The short trip from Claremont to Pomona sure didn't disrupt the team's momentum as they put up 15 more goals and defeated Occidental 15-4. Farrell had two more goals, and Daniel Soares had a hat-trick behind a strong outing by goalie Jon Young, who gave up only four goals, his season-low for goals-against this season.

Saturday, Santa Clara will face two strong opponents in the University of La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer College. Last season, Santa Clara came away with a one-goal victory over La Verne at the Redlands Tournament, and had two victories over Pomona including a 9-4 victory at the WWPA Championships. Saturday's match against Pomona could be a different story, though. For only the second time this season, Santa Clara will be facing their opponent in their opponent's home pool.

Santa Clara gets started first thing Saturday morning, facing La Verne at 8:00 a.m. followed by Pomona-Pitzer at 12:30 p.m.. Both matches will be held at the Haldeman Pool at Pomona-Pitzer College.
