Sports Medicine Center
Santa Clara University's Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by Bronco athletes. The philosophy of the Sports Medicine Center can be described as a team approach. The training room is staffed by three certified athletic trainers and 15 student athletic trainers.
The Best of Care The Sports Medicine Center also utilizes the assistance of the University's Cowell Health Center and the Counseling Center. Additionally, Santa Clara athletes are fortunate to have Dr. Michael Dillingham and Dr. Jeffery Saal, owners of the SOAR Clinic and team doctors of the San Francisco 49ers, as their team physicians. Physical therapist Ron Kaminski, the owner of the MORE Clinic near campus, also works closely with Santa Clara's student athletes.
The Sports Medicine Center is actively involved with the health and well-being of its student athletes. Recently, the University constructed a 2,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art treatment center to assure the medical needs of each athlete are addressed. The newly-constructed Sports Medicine Center contains a hydrotherapy room, a physician's room, four taping stations, a rehabilitation room complete with all of the latest sports medicine equipment, a treatment area consisting of eight tables and several modalities, televisions, a sound system and offices for the sports medicine staff.
Insurance Information Injured athletes are covered by an insurance program which was developed to coordinate with the NCAA Lifetime Catastrophic Insurance Program. This policy covers student-athletes for any injury sustained while participating in their sport during team practice, game competition or traveling to/from competition. All insurance processing is centralized in the Sports Medicine Center.
Student Trainer Program The Student Trainer Development Program is open to any Santa Clara student who is entertaining a career in sports medicine. Interested students apply to the program by filling out a standard application form and supplying two references. The Sports Medicine Center student staff usually numbers between 14 and 17 student trainers. Previous related work experience is preferred, but not required. Once a student is accepted, he/she is required to put in approximately 10 hours per week in the training room. First-year students do not get paid. After the first year, a student will receive either work study or a tuition stipend. Each student is assigned to work with a specific team. Student trainers are also required to participate in an Inservice Program, which are held four to six times per quarter, covering issues such as anatomy, rehabilitation techniques and the psychology of the injured athlete. Skills such as taping techniques, stretching patterns, massage, theory and application of various modalities, rehabilitation, etc., are also taught. The student trainer staff is a very energetic, intelligent and fun-loving group.
